Former Student Profile - Abigail Seager, Class of 2010

Guild Y8

We look forward to welcoming back Abigail on Tuesday 5 November 2019 for the Year 8 Inspire and Career Talk

What years did you attend WHS?

2003-2010

What did you get up to at WHS study and extracurricular wise?

I did 4 A-Levels: Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Spanish. I also used to help out in the library at lunch times and I had a Saturday job at the library in town. I also met a pretty special bunch of people who remain my closest friends to this day!

Do you have any funny stories or fond memories you’d like to share?

I don't know if they still do it these days but when I left WHS there was a day when we all had to dress up as 'what we wanted to be when we were little'. I went as an astronaut and everyone thought I always wanted to be the Stig from Top Gear….

What did you do after WHS?

I went to the University of Nottingham to study for an undergraduate masters in Physics. After graduation I joined the BBC on a graduate trainee program and trained up as a broadcast engineer. I graduated again in 2016 with a postgrad masters in Broadcast Engineering and I’m still working at the BBC now.

What are you doing now?

These days I’m Senior Systems Engineer working in connectivity. Essentially, it’s my job to connect pictures and sound from live events that are happening on location, back to a studio. The events can be anything from a News broadcast outside Buckingham Palace, to Wimbledon, Glastonbury or the Olympics. It’s a challenging job but I get to work with some incredible people, I get to travel round the world for events and there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing something on telly and knowing I helped get it there!

What do you know now that you didn’t in Year 13 that you’d like to share with current students?

It’s ok not to have a plan or not to know what you want to do. And If you do have a plan, then it’s ok if it changes – that’s life! I’ve spent way too much time agonising over having plan for life and sticking to it, but it just doesn’t work that way. Be bold and do what makes you happy!
