Hughenden Manor Christmas Concert
On Sunday the 1 December, members from the Wycombe High School concert band took part in the Carols at Hughenden event at Hughenden Manor.
It was a great experience and we had a lovely day playing our carol pieces with an audience to support us. We were conducted by Mr Kidd and Mr Davie joined in with the brass section. It was a wonderful extra curricular event for the Wycombe High School music department to take part in.
We arrived at 10:30 at Hughenden Manor, it was a cold day but we were prepared. We met with Mr Kidd and Mr Davie and went to a room to set up our instruments. We went outside to play on the beautiful lawn of the Manor, in front of the main house, surrounded by fir trees adding to the Christmas feel! We had a supportive audience watching and listening to us as we played popular carols before we played some of our pieces that we will play in the Christmas Concert. After we had played for some time, we had a fifteen minute break to eat some food and stay inside in the warmth.
When we came back out to play again, Mr Kidd went back inside to get his saxophone and played with us, encouraging the Year 11s and 13s to conduct some of our pieces instead. A few of the girls took it in turns to conduct and it was a great way to build confidence to lead a group of musicians in a piece.
After a while, we had another break. When we came back out, Mr Kidd conducted us in the piece Twelve Days of Christmas, a very long song. We repeated the verses over and over which was quite challenging but it was a lot of fun and the whole day got everybody in the Christmas spirit! It was also the very first day of December which is when people believe Christmas has started.
We ended with one of our carols and went back inside after a very appreciative audience applauded our work. We put away our instruments and all went home. Overall it was a lovely day of sharing our musical pieces, this was a great experience for the Wycombe High School music department. I believe we should participate in more events like this.
We would like to thank Mr Kidd, Mr Davie and Wycombe High School for giving the music students this opportunity.
