Rachel Walker – WHS Class of 2016 - Reflections of Graduating in Lockdown

Guild Careers

After graduating back in 2019 with a 2:1 in Zoology from Reading University, I decided to continue my studies and undertake a Masters in Species identification and Survey Skills.

Just as lockdown began, I was due to complete several practical exams which instead had to be conducted online. One of them involved identifying plants and mosses from pictures online, which was not easy!

After these exams, I was due to begin my 6-month placement working as an ecological consultant at ECUS Environmental Consultants. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 it was postponed by 2 months. I was very lucky as many of my friends had their placements, at other companies, cancelled altogether.

I have now just started at the company and I am really enjoying it. So far, I’ve been conducting bat and reptile surveys and will hopefully be carrying out surveys with other protected species such as Otter and Dormice soon.

Fingers crossed if all goes well, I’ll be graduating in September.
