Year 8 Options Journey FAQ's

Deciding what optional subjects to take at GCSE is a difficult decision. The decision is unique to each student and something you should decide for yourself. It is a great opportunity to think about what your career path may look like in the future.

These FAQs will hopefully answer any queries you may have. However if you have any further questions please do not hesitate getting in touch with your subject Teachers, your Tutor, Mr Garrett-Chapman (Head of Year 8) or Mrs Gray  (Deputy Headteacher).

You will study compulsory core subjects – Maths, English Language, English Literature, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. In addition to these subjects, you will choose 4 subjects from the 15 in the Options handbook.

No, you should focus on the subjects that you believe you will enjoy and that you want to study for your future/career aspirations.
It is very difficult to change a subject once you have started it because of the amount of work you may have missed. It is therefore important to find out as much as you can about the subject before choosing it.
Unfortunately not. We do however always try and confirm your first subject choices.

The deadline 9.00 am on 19 February 2024.

Please make sure you read, and re-read, if necessary, your Options Journey booklet. Watch each video that is shared with you. Attend your Options Fair in January. Speak to subject staff and arrange to see Mr Garrett-Chapman (Head of Year 8).

In addition to Maths, English Language, English Literature, Physics, Biology and Chemistry you need to choose 1 x Humanity subject (History, Geography or Ancient History) and 1 x Language (French or Spanish). Please refer to your Options Booklet.

These subjects are the same GCSE provided by different exam boards with a different specialism.  We do not allow students to take Textiles GCSE and Product Design GCSE due to high volume of work.

You will be given access to our SIMS On-Line system on 10 January to enter your chosen options. You can enter them as soon as you are given access and you can amend your options as many time as you wish prior to the deadline of 9.00 am on 19 February 2024.
