WHS student reporters win top FA Sports Award

Three Wycombe High School students have won a top FA Sports Award for their “impressive” video highlights coverage of Wycombe Wanderers Women.

Daya Bhangoo, Amani Khan and Maryam Zaman, who are all in Year 9, were recruited by the Club at the start of last season to report on the Chairgirls’ games and produce video highlights films.

The judging panel, from the FA Southern Region Women’s Football League, were so impressed by the coverage the students produced, they selected Wycombe Wanderers Women for their prestigious Best Social Media Award.

The League’s General Secretary, Clare Nichols, said: “Three of the League’s Directors sat on the awards panel, and we were really impressed by the Wycombe Wanderers Women highlights coverage and the standard of the films produced by the young reporters. The videos were different, innovative and creative and you could see that a lot of time and effort had gone into them.

“Congratulations to the reporters and the Club. Social media presence is vital for raising the profile of women’s football, and it is just as important for young women and their parents to see such positive experiences and role models for local football, as it is for them to see the FA Women’s Super League and England stars”.

Maryam said: “Thank you to Wycombe Wanderers for this amazing opportunity and I am over the moon! As a young woman, it’s wonderful to think that the FA have acknowledged our contribution to the women’s game”.

Amani added: “We really appreciate being recognised by the FA for our reporting work and we would like to thank Wycombe Wanderers for the opportunity they have given us”.

Daya said: “It’s absolutely brilliant! I am honoured to be given this award and so grateful to Wycombe Wanderers for giving us this amazing opportunity”.

Wycombe Wanderers Trust Chair, Nigel Kingston, added: “Congratulations Daya, Amani and Maryam. We are absolutely delighted with this award which is such a positive endorsement of the Trust and the Club’s ongoing campaign to reach out to the local community and promote the women’s game”.

Wycombe High School Headteacher, Sharon Cromie, said: “We are so proud of Daya, Amani and Maryam. It is wonderful to see all their hard work and creativity being recognised by such a prestigious award. We are also delighted that Wycombe High School’s relationship with Wycombe Wanderers has resulted in such a success story”.
